When to Trade a Card vs Hold It: A Decision Framework
The hardest trading decision isn't what to offer — it's whether to trade a specific card away at all. Here's a framework for that decision.
Start With Your Own Deck Needs
A card that's actively useful in a deck you're playing is worth more to you than its raw trade value suggests — factor in personal utility, not just what the card could get you in trade, before deciding to move it.
Consider Trade Value Trajectory, Not Just Current Value
A card's trade value isn't static — cards tied to a currently strong competitive strategy can see value shift as the broader card pool and strategies evolve. Holding a card you don't currently need can sometimes be worth more than trading it immediately, and sometimes the opposite is true — there's no universal rule, which is why checking current community trade-value discussion before a big decision matters.
Collection Completion Goals
If your goal is completing a specific set, holding cards toward that set's completion has value beyond their trade price — see our collection checklist tool to track what you actually still need before trading away a card that fills a gap.
The Duplicate Question
Duplicate copies of a card you're already using are the clearest case for trading — you get the same deck utility from one copy, and a duplicate's only value is what it can get you in a trade.
A Simple Decision Checklist
Before trading: is this card in a deck I'm currently playing? Does it fill a gap in a set I'm completing? Is its trade value likely to hold or improve versus what's currently on offer? If none of these favor holding, trading is usually the right call.
